Researchers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the University of Rhode Island combined economic modeling with satellite and fisheries data to estimate the multi-million dollar annual losses sargassum blooms inflict on tourism, recreation, and fishing across Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Florida's Atlantic coast, and show how forecasting tools can strengthen coastal planning and response.
